Ducommun and the Los Angeles Chargers Launch STEM on the Sidelines™ with University of California, Irvine to Promote STEM in Local High Schools

Local High School Students Will Compete in STEM on the Sidelines™ Contest for a Chance to Attend Chargers-Broncos Game on November 18

SANTA ANA, Calif., Oct. 26, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ducommun Incorporated (NYSE:DCO), a manufacturer of electronic, structural and engineered products for the aerospace & defense industry, and the Los Angeles Chargers partnered with the University of California, Irvine (UCI) to develop and launch STEM on the Sidelines™ to help promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in local Los Angeles and Orange County high schools.

“We are thrilled to be working on this important initiative with the Los Angeles Chargers and UCI,” said Stephen G. Oswald, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Ducommun Incorporated. “As a manufacturer of engineered products, it is our responsibility to promote STEM in local schools and expose these disciplines to students in the hope of inspiring them to pursue a meaningful career in a technical field.”

STEM on the Sidelines™ is a fun contest for teams of six to eight students to use STEM skills to build and then program a mini football launcher for length and accuracy. The competition for all teams will take place at the Chargers training facility, the Hoag Performance Center, in Costa Mesa, Calif., on November 11. A total of 30 teams, comprised of more than 200 students from 22 different high schools, will participate in the inaugural year. The winning team will be honored on the field at the Chargers home game against the Denver Broncos on November 18 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

“We have always believed it’s our responsibility to make a real difference in the lives of local youth, not only today but in the future,” said Chargers president of business operations A.G. Spanos. “STEM on the Sidelines™ is a fun way for us to combine football and STEM to hopefully encourage kids to develop a passion for science, mathematics, technology and engineering. STEM plays a part in all our lives and we need to ensure our youth have the tools to succeed and become the future leaders of our community.”

“The STEM on the Sidelines™ contest is our attempt to draw a connection to students’ everyday lives through athletic interests. So often, STEM outreach initiatives start with the educational concepts and are not connected to what students have an everyday interest in, whereas STEM on the Sidelines™ does the opposite by aiming to enrich the existing interest-driven spaces of youth with STEM learning,” said Leyla Riley, executive director for the UCI OC STEM initiative.
